Reflections on the Day of My Second Shot

Saturday, February 20, 2021

Today’s my day for a second vaccination shot. It feels like I am in line for a school hall pass, or about to take a break from a long siege. It remains to be seen how ‘free’ I can be in the world or how open the world will be, but I am eager to find out.

I am older and I’m noticing that among my age mates there is more talk of sadness now around the lost year. I suspect it is because as we age we realize how precious time is. Our horizons are shorter and in some cases we’ve lost people and even the ability to gather to mourn them. And because many of us are getting vaccinated we can at last take a breather from all the ‘bucking up’ we’ve done all year to say, this was hard!

Still, I’d like to think that all the ‘bounce’ and resilience we have shown one another during this time will somehow benefit those who come behind us. We are getting through this, living lives as health-i-ly as we can, and staying in touch in new ways. It remains to be seen how the pandemic year will impact each of us over the long haul.

Very well stated. Just catching up here by "following the breadcrumbs"

We are still waiting for our turn, even at 73 and 76.
It's OK since we have the option to remain hermits awhile longer.
As we think about where we will travel once it is safe, we are well aware of the dwindling years and those we have lost.

Happy to hear you're soon to be fully vaccinated.

Each day, each moment is precious. Deep, deep sense of loss associated with the pandemic experience in so many regards.

I feel the loss of time more than anything else, each year the physical capabilities and stamina decrease and nothing brings it back.

Toni i so very happy for you for finally receiving your second shot. Unfortunately we are way behind the US. I will be lucky to get my first shot by April. I don’t think much will change for awhile according to the news we are hearing lately. I know I will be relieved once my Dh and I have been vaccinated. We have all learned to do things we never even imagined and have come out so much stronger. I know I will appreciate the small things especially hugging my kids.

So happy that you've got your complete vaccination in place.

Yes, every day is precious. I keep seeing obits for people my age, and younger and am reminded to make the most of the present.

I love this blog. congratulations on getting your second vaccine.

My daughter told me recently that this past year has taught her how she has been able to stay connected to the people that are important to her. There are a lot of great lessons in resiliency, compassion, and science that we have learned this past year for sure.
