Tuesday was a Monday wannabe

Tuesday, January 19, 2021

I was looking at the retirement board's rules for retirement and discovered that it is mandated that we start collecting our retirement before I turn 72 years and 6 months. I was hoping to get a few more years because I love my students and really feel like I am making a difference in their lives. If I submit my retirement letter by February 10th, I get a $500 bonus. If I start next year, I would have to retire midyear and abandon my kids to a sub and would not get the bonus. The difference in what I would get in retirement by waiting isn't very much and I was already considering retirement but very conflicted about it. I also don't want to make the decision while in mourning and stressed out, but I guess that it is pretty much a done deal now with this news.

I am tired and journaling about the process of making this journey into the unknown.

I am off to bed now! Be blessed and a blessing to all whose lives you touch and have an impact on.

No one understands like another teacher how big a role our students and their feelings take in making such decisions. Praying for you to find the right choice for you.

Wow Nancy what an important decision to have to make! I think you should do it but that's just because of the consequences for waiting seem harsh. Not getting $500 and leaving your students to a sub! Good luck on making your decision whatever you decide to do. Whatever it is it will be the right one. Bless you for all you do for those wonderful kids! Take care.

An important decision like that with a short time to make it in. Fortunately you have the years to qualify and social security. I retired 4 years before I planned on unexpected as my husband because of the incentives and changes that were coming. Never regretted it. With special needs kids my daughter calls and writes her teachers still after all these years since she only had 3.
