The Struggle of Winter

Tuesday, January 19, 2021

I live in North Central Florida. The sound of the word Florida gives the impression of never ending summer. That's the state moto anyways, isn't it? Maybe not. I'm not really sure. However, not where I live.

Ever since the cooler weather has rolled in (back in October or so time frame) it has been hard to lose weight. I was really successful last summer, losing over 40lbs, but now I'm practically at a stand still.

I am coming to the conclusion that this is the worse time of year to try to lose weight. Maybe that is why so many people fail at the new year's resolution. They quickly feel defeated and give up. Two reasons why this is a terrible time to start a weight loss goal.

1. It is COLD- it's cold y'all. Maybe not as cold here as it is in other places. You don't want to go outside. My body anyways is more inclined to move less to conserve energy. Less sunlight and I feel lethargic. Basically I have so much less motivation to keep moving throughout the day. Either to stay warm, or to just rest. Maybe it's my European roots telling me I can't move and lose that weight because I'm going to freeze to death.

Side note: No one told me that when you take off weight that you are "accustomed" to that you are more sensitive to the cold. Where was that in the fine print? I'm so embarrassed that I bundle up in "freezing" 65 degree weather! I was born and raised in Connecticut for heaven sake!

2. The shorter days- I remember in the summer I was up and moving late into the evening. Well past 9 o'clock. It wasn't even completely dark. Now I am done before 6... earlier if it is an overcast day. Did I also mention it is cold.

It is also cold and dark in the mornings. I use to go outside every morning. Now that ain't happening. I'm going to freeze to death if I do. All right I am being quite dramatic.

Anyways, the whole point of this post is to get around to the fact that I just can't wait for the warmer weather. I'll keep trudging along. Doing the little bit that I can but as soon as it get warmer out

Also don't give up on your weight loss if you just started. This will pass. Don't get discouraged. Just keep doing the best you can. You will be that much more ahead when spring or summer rolls around.

I fell ya. I live way far north by comparison, but I already notice the days are getting longer. I'm getting out in 40 degree weather regularly, but the other day it was 38 and I had to go back in and get a different outer layer before starting our jog. (I eventually tie the sweatshirt around my waist). I do think it is harder with shorter days and the pull to cozy up and snuggle in. I've been trying more indoor stuff in the evening, little yoga or weight workout, nothing super hard, but a little more movement. I do think getting outside even if it is cool/cold is good for your soul, so bundle up and give it a try ;)
Maintaining right now isn't terrible either, give your body a break to get ready for the next big loss !!

OK, I'll be nice and not compare MI cold to FL cold, lol--but I will whine about the added challenge of being older and afraid of slipping on ice and breaking a hip-- makes for a fine excuse not to go out in the cold. The only thing that keeps me alive in Winter is looking forward to Spring and then Summer!

Walking in my house is warmer and safer right now. Sidewalks have patches of black ice.
