Comfort Food

I just arrived back from my week away - and unpacked everything - had a cup of coffee etc.

It felt kind of 'empty' and I'm also short of money until pay day. I've had a week of eating pre-packaged foods - which fall SO far short of freshly prepared food! I'm lucky I don't have to eat those foods all the time.

These factors kind of threw me into a comfort baking session - I made up a batch of 10 mixed grain bread rolls from a packet-mix I buy from the shop (yes, packaged, but only flour and yeast), and mixed up a batch of baked oatmeal with apple, cinnamon and nutmeg. The house now smells very homely, and I feel 'safe' in that I know I've got enough rib-sticking kind of food to supplement my diet for the next few days or so.

I haven't gone short of money for quite a long time - but this month I did buy quite a lot on-line - mostly Xmas presents! I'm glad I did it.

My comfort foods are sugar-free and diary free, and virtually fat-free except from the bit of soya milk in the baked oatmeal. So what? Well, better than factory-made, triple-fried potato chips, or factory-made, fast-baked cookies.

I recognise that my need to make the bread and baked oatmeal was a need for comfort - slightly fearful of being out of money, and slightly stressed about being back amongst people in town and the fear of Covid-19 etc. Fear then, mostly............... cinnamon smells are very comforting.
