Guarding Your Bone or Chasing Ribbons?

A question I'm trying to remember to ask myself is, Am I embracing the valuable gift, or distracted by the wrappings?

I'm a cat lover and have had the privilege of being owned by 4 cats over the years in addition to caring for a few others short term. One thing I noticed that was fairly consistent is that cats have a tendency to be a lot more interested in boxes and ribbons than in the gifts I purchased for them. Sometimes they would completely ignore the toy I had spent money on, but spend hours batting around a bit of cardboard, chasing a ribbon or playing with, or in, the box the gift was wrapped in. They could care less about what had been inside the package.

How often we are like that in life. We are distracted by the trivial and miss the valuable gift of health, peace, joy or our other goals while we chase momentary comfort or fun. Or our eyes are pulled off our goals by distractions of good things (but not the best) or worries, obstacles, or just plain busyness. We spend so much time and energy chasing things that have no lasting value. There are times we need to take out the trash. Throw out the ribbon and boxes and be intentional in embracing the gift, refocus on our goals and pursue them. Instead of being like a playful cat, we need to be more like a dog with a bone. Guard what is valuable. Fight for it, and don't let anyone take it away from you.

As we begin a new 5% Weight Loss Challenge, I'm trying to find that bone that's buried in the pile of wrappings. The one or two things I need to grab onto and hang onto so I can make progress. Not all ribbons and distractions are enjoyable. Some of mine are chronic pain, an erratic sleep schedule, activity limitations because of how my state has responded to Covid, emotional responses to all that is going on.... Those ribbons need to be clipped, discarded, ignored or managed so I can go after the real prize.

    Great point, Diane. We need a bit of fun in our lives. Keeping a few ribbons while also keeping our eye on the gift is a positive thing. But upon reflection, aren't those positive ribbons really part of the gift? Hmmm... (I couldn't find a thinking emo). Either way, it made me laugh and think, and both of those are healthy!

    For me, it's whole food without flour that keeps me fuller longer PLUS a consistent work-out schedule.

    ... but I have to admit that there are some ribbons I may keep around
