Mysterious Meter Reader

Wednesday, September 16, 2020

I belong to the Concerned Citizens Facebook page for my town. Monday night the utility company posted a message they received from a resident stating someone was walking around homes saying "Reading Meters" and looking in windows. The man was in a reflective vest and driving a very plain white SUV with no plates. This incident happened just outside of town where a group of houses are located. Someone commented that the sheriff caught up with the guy and he had all his credentials. I still have so many questions and thoughts. Since it was out of city limits, the man could have been from the rural utility company. It would not have been a city utility employee then. Why the unmarked car at 5:00pm? If it were an employee, he should have had the company vehicle that is clearly marked. Also, these businesses are closed by 5pm unless there is an emergency. Also, why are they walking around looking at meters? My friend who lives in the area said they have meters that "talk" to something in the truck. They only have to drive by slowly. Now with technology, they probably don't have to do that either. I know the city has meters that they do not need to walk up to now. Finally, why is he looking in windows? Rumor has it there is a theft ring in town that is being very sneaky about marking and breaking into homes. The police have not sent out a media statement on that yet. A friend wonders why I keep my blinds to my lower level closed when I am not down there. I don't want or need people looking in my windows. As a single woman with a teen daughter, there is a reason I have a big dog with a scary bark. The way he sounds sometimes, you have to know us (and him) or be crazy to come in.

What a problem that could create, wonder if the sheriff really checked his ID for work that closely, those looking in side windows---usually are up to no good. There is no reason for anyone to be looking into windows, unless they are doing a welfare check on a person, before breaking in to see if the person is there.
I agree with you, I would be closing the blinds one lower level, and even first floor when living by self.

OH WOW!! That does sound so STRANGE!! The police didn't call the company to verify this since he's in an unmarked vehicle after 4 PM?

    WOOF WOOF Smart idea!

That does sound suspicious. My meter guy always comes during the day, wears a reflective vest, carries a meter reading gun, and is in and out of the yard in ten seconds. You are smart to be wary.

This sounds highly suspicious---and I find the whole thing odd! Why was he in an unmarked car and peeking in windows? I know in this part of the country, meter readers no longer show up; it is all done via technology, as you say. That job has been eliminated. I too would keep my blinds closed---but have the neighbors keep an eye on this! It is creepy!

Meter reading may be a difficult job.
