Visit from Tacy
Tuesday, September 15, 2020
We had a great weekend because Tacy and Roisin came for 3 days! Our house just livens up when Tacy comes home. The only sport we watch is Formula 1 racing and honestly this was the best race we've watched. It was at a track they'd not raced before so the drivers didn't "know" the track which made for lots of excitement so having Tacy here made it perfect. Plus the race was in an are that sure reminded me of looking out our windows at the mountains. Stunning and gorgeous. We had BBQ ribs and a mixed pepper pasta salad as we watched. They drank champagne (a race tradition here) and I had my tea. They said these were the best ribs ever! and it was an excellent salad. I only had one serving of each and was down a pound the next day, so no harm done! Tacy's co-workers enjoyed left overs and I need to send recipes! That's a nice compliment.
Otherwise things are weird. Our neighbor whose apartment is attached to our house, died. We didn't realise until I said those sirens are sounding close as we sat in the back yard, Jeff went to look out front, they were coming here!!! Since there is no visible door from the street the police came to us and we quickly figured it was for her. The cop was upset because the only thing we knew was her first name, her illness, she had one grown child (in prison) and she had a cat. How can you not know who is living attached to your house? He had a hard time believing us but she was private and would only say "hello" to us or a one word answer if asked a question. We have watched her dwindle away due to chemo and told her to call if she needed any help and she never did. But apparently her cleaning lady found her. She was fine the previous night as I heard her do laundry.
Turns out she had a nephew near by, they came to take the cat the next day and told us her son would be getting a "compassionate leave" from prison. This perked up Jeff's ear so he dusted off his PI skills and delved into this guy. He is 53 and had been jailed 36 times since and convicted for drug sales, weapons. He in the local county jail on a felony as the prisons are full. Neighbors (we know them!) told us she would have nothing to do with her son, he would come round when not in jail and she'd chase him off His cousin says "but he's never been violent to family so it's ok if he stays here to clean out her belongings" Jeff flips and even though it's Friday, he called sheriffs, the DA and who knows who else. But sure enuf on Tuesday there was a hearing scheduled to have him released, his lawyer filed everything but sheriff & DA knew nothing about this hearing so by Monday afternoon that was stopped and NO he is not getting out. So now the lady's nephew is pissed and it was unpleasant for 2 weeks, with them slowly emptying the place.
Yesterday the manager of our place showed up with workers to update the apartment and he wants to divide our backyard to give some to that apartment. We are against this! The apartment doesn't even have windows into the yard but does have a nice large patio half covered. Much more than apartments usually have, It doesn't need half our yard. And the yard is my reason for paying the stupidly high rent we pay (>$1200. more than the house we left where we didn't have an apartment on the property and the house was larger and in town) I am now feeling unsettled and a wee bit worried about what will happen. But I just keeping playing Doris Days' "Que sera, sera" in my head. It will be OK (somehow).
I refuse to move to another place in this area. Even before I met Jeff back in '78 I was trying to move away. It is beautiful here but looks aren't everything and I have never felt "at home" in SB.
