Mindful Eating--when sparking starts making sense

Tuesday, August 11, 2020

Don't you just love when Sparking starts making sense and begins to get easier? For the longest time I have fought eating away from my desk or being on the computer. Since retreat, I have now made a habit to sit on my porch and just being in quiet, eating more slowly and watching nature.

The challenge that I am working hard on is to eat a meal at least for 20 minutes. When you eat meals alone and have only a sandwich, it is hard to make it last for 20 minutes. Even mindfully chewing 20 to 40 chews gets wearisome. Now I am getting a bit more creative. Tonight I steamed bluegill and had green beans. By trying to avoid even the tiny bone-like cartilage, the meal got quite prolonged. And taking my time with the green beans helped tremendously.

And eating more slowly and calmly is great for being more mindful the rest of the day and not staying keyed and up tense. It's great when things begin to click.

Twenty minutes doesn't seem like very long to eat to me, but I am pokey! I am also naughty and often eat in front of the computer. But I still enjoy it.

I too fight eating my lunch away from my computer or phone. I know it is so much better for me. I make sure to take sips of water between bites of food. I hear ya when it comes to making a meal last for 20 minutes.

Carrots and celery take a lot of time too.
