Apollo 13

Monday, August 03, 2020

Apollo 13 he movie swooped into theaters in 1995. It was based on the book “Lost Moon, a Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13” (written by Astronaut Jim Lovell & journalist Jeffrey Kluger) about the 1970 moon shot. The astronauts were the afore mentioned Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, & Fred Haise. They were shot out from Cape Canaveral (the name wasn’t changed to Cape Kennedy until 1973).There were glitches, like being bumped up from Apollo 14 to 13. Ken Mattingly was exposed to possible German measles, & Swigert was his backup. During (not before) flight, Fred Haise had a urinary tract infection. The second stage booster dropped firing early, but not too bad.

So, here they go, all happy excited about the moon launch. Typical launch, away they go. On day 3 of the mission, the astronauts do their funny little talks & tricks in no gravity, not knowing they are not being broadcast. Asked by Mission Control asked them to “stir the oxygen tanks” - but when Swigert complied, the oxygen tank exploded & evacuated to stored oxygen. Oops. The shuttle is tumbling through space. The second tank is leaking “Houston, we’ve have had a problem” They try to stop the leak ... not working so well. They discuss with Mission Control. The lunar landing is scrapped, now it’s a recovery. Everybody & their uncles are pulled in. “FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!”says Flight Director Kranz.

Frequently mistaken as “Houston, we have a problem”

The astronauts work to save battery power & still survive. They are trying out everything so the astronauts don’t burn up power or components. They have to manually control the return. They are freezing as they cannot use power for heat. They make the Jerry-rigged CO2 scrubbers - it works! Eventually, the lads transfer to the escape pod (which they would have used in a standard return, anyway). They splash down. The final scene has the real astronauts appearing. Yay!. Apollo 13 launched on 11April 1970, splashing down on 17 April 1970.

I Can See for Miles, The Who, used in this movie
Great soundtrack!

I know you've deceived me, now here's a surprise
I know that you have 'cause there's magic in my eyes

I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Oh yeah
If you think that I don't know about the little tricks you've played
And never see you when deliberately you put things in my way

Well, here's a poke at you
You're gonna choke on it too
You're gonna lose that smile
Because all the while

I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Oh yeah

You took advantage of my trust in you when I was so far away
I saw you holding lots of other guys and now you've got the nerve to say

They had to wait for the astronauts to circle the moon - no transmissions behind the moon!

That you still want me
Well, that's as may be
But you gotta stand trial
Because all the while

I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Oh yeah

I know you've deceived me, now here's a surprise
I know that you have 'cause there's magic in my eyes
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Oh yeah

The Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal are mine to see on clear days
You thought that I would need a crystal ball to see right through the haze

Well, here's a poke at you
You're gonna choke on it too
You're gonna lose that smile
Because all the while

I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
And miles and miles and miles and miles

I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
