Salt and Light. July 22 2020
“ You are the salt of the earth.....You are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:13-14
Imagine a scene from long ago,the Rabbi Jesus, sat down to teach His followers the meaning of being agents of change in the world. He outlined the path to spiritual prosperity and then punctuated His proclamation with the affirmation, “ You are the salt of the earth.” “ You are the light of the world.” Now consider His audience. These were not the educated elite or people of prominence, just ordinary people to whom He assigned the astounding task of influencing society so profoundly so to preserve it from decaying..to bring light into darkness. How do we do that? It is by living spiritually prosperous lives. As a store manager in Canadian Tire I often found myself in spiritually and moral dark surroundings. I was shy and timid with my verbal witness. I tried to be salt and light. Some of my fellow workers took notice. It is not always by words that you win someone to Christ. It is often how you act and treat others that make them notice there is something different about you. Light has a way of shining through. Francis of Assisi summed it up well when he said, “ Preach the gospel, and if necessary, use words.
Salt has a number of characteristics that illustrate the Christian’s role in the world. It hinders the spread of corruption, it creates thirst, and it enhances flavour. Christians who live out these virtues described in the Beatitudes achieve all three of these purposes. Jesus’ purpose is to be a “ light to the nations” He confers the same task on His followers who are to be “ the light of the world.” , reflecting His light into the worlds darkness. Christians must allow God’s light to be on full display their lives. Their responsibility is twofold: to guard against anything that can separate them from their only source of light and to let their light shine that others will see the reality of Christ in them and glorify their Heavenly Father.
🙏Jesus May my light shine brightly so that the world might see You in everything. I want to serve You with my life and may it bring testimony to who you are. Help me not to hide my light under a bushel, may it shine brightly for You.
