Do You Love Me? July 21 2020
“ Again Jesus said, “ Simon son of John , do you love Me?” He answered, “ Yes , Lord, you know that I love You.” Jesus answered “ Take care of my sheep.”
John 21:16. NIV.
Peter had been frustrated by Jesus asking him three times in a row if he loved Him. Yet, Jesus commissioned Peter to a great task, and the only qualification was Peter’s love for Jesus. Jesus didn’t ask, “How long have you known me?” Or “ What evidence is there of your spiritual maturity? “ or even “ Why do you think you’d be a good fit for this role? “ No, simply He asked “ Do you love Me?” When my wife and I felt called to serve overseas as missionaries we applied to six different Mission Agencies. They all told us that our mission field was our family and that we should stay in Canada and minister to our family. We became frustrated and I remember that we said that Jesus just wants us to love Him. So we stayed home. 16 years later the call was still there and we reapplied to Missions and received the same answer as we had the first time. Jesus just said “ Do you love Me?” We then applied to Avant and were accepted to go to Ecuador. There were days that I felt completely out of my depth in the tasks the Lord had given to us We cared for His sheep in particular a little girl with Downs Syndrome who was given to us to die with dignity as doctors had given up on her. There are still days when I feel like I don’t measure up to what others expect of me or even of what I expect of myself. At those times I wonder whether I am qualified to do it. These are the days when I need to remember what Jesus wants from me is that I love Him. My love for Him is what qualifies me for the task. Not my credentials, not my depth of understanding, not even my spiritual maturity. I have nothing to offer Jesus except my love for Him. Then carrying out the tasks He gives me is simply showing my love to Him.
Feeding and caring for Jesus’ sheep means tending to those who follow Him. Church leaders have a special responsibility , the care of the flock. Once Peter was restored by Jesus, he was able to deeply embrace the grace of God and become the powerful, yet tender leader that his Lord had called him to be.
🙏Father God help me to love Jesus more and more. Overlook my humanness and use me to further your kingdom. Make me tender hearted like Peter and yet powerful in Your strength. Keep evil away from me and help me to remain focused on the tasks You have given to me.
