Comfort in Hard Times. July 19 2020.
“ His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence, by which He has granted to us His precious and very great promises so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. “
2 Peter 1:3-4. ESV.
I served fifteen years in the business world, and then I turned to farming for fifteen years. Moving from a farm to a missionary in Quito Ecuador was a shock in itself. In many ways I had to relearn how to work with people in a mission context, before I could even witness to unbelieving Ecuadorians. Many times I felt inadequate for the tasks and it just was not normal to me. The above verse was a comfort to me. Whenever I had a rough day. And the darkness of the city weighed heavy on me I could always cling to this verse and allow it to comfort me. It is comforting to be reminded that I share the same faith as many giants of the faith who came before me. I too have been granted His precious and magnificent promises and I can become a partake of the divine nature because of Him who has called me by His own glory and grace. The verses right after (5-11) help me refocus on being diligent in my faith and , inevitably, I walk away encouraged to continue the fight with patience and perseverance. I have been granted everything pertaining to life and godliness through Jesus, and I am reminded to draw close to Him.
God’s divine power is an inexhaustible resource that gives God’s people everything they need for an obedient godly life. The Bible is at once an instruction manual, a tool kit, a repository of God’s precious promises and a glorious testimony for a life of faith. But it’s transforming benefits can only be assessed if God’s people will study it closely. The Bible should never be admired from a distance. Mining the riches of God’s exceeding great and precious gifts allows believers to lay a strong faith foundation and work out of the Word of God in their lives. When Christians live according to God’s promises in Scripture, they become partakers of the divine nature and they look more like their Saviour. His promises also keep them from being tainted by the world’s corruption, consequently God’s people look less and less like the world.
Father make me more and more like Jesus and let the things of this world become strangely dim in the light of your Word.
