Declare His Praise. July 11 2020
“ You who lift me up from the gates of death, that I may tell off all Your praise......I will rejoice in Your salvation.” Psalm 9:13-14.
About two years after we took Alicia into our home, she came down with pneumonia and was hospitalized. She got worse and worse and her tiny little body could not recover. Her breathing from birth was laboured and she would not allow Clara to leave her bedside. Doctors talked of intubating her and putting in a breathing tube. The other alternative was to get her out of the altitude in Quito and take her to the coast. Someone from the school that are kids attended offered us a condo for free in Saame. Clara and Alicia travelled down there on a Monday and I was to meet them on Thursday. When I arrived the baby was black and was barely breathing. Clara and I decided right there and then to give over our rights and agenda to God. We got down on our knees and prayed, “ Lord do not keep her hanging on for us. She is your child and if You want her home with You we will be ok with that.” I sent out a quick email to our friends, church and supporters and asked them to pray along the same lines. Alicia in our minds had suffered enough and we could say, “ Not my will but Yours be done.” But, God had other plans. Almost immediately she picked up a little strength and improved. God spared her. She had many other episodes but we were always encouraged because we knew that God was in it, and He loved Alicia even more than we do. Throughout all of Alicia’s life, God enabled us to share Christ with more people as we shared her story. Alicia turned twenty a few days ago. She is a miracle child. Doctors gave her to us at seven months to allow her to die with dignity under the care of a nurse, my wife Clara. Two years later we gave her to God, because we thought her life was finished. God knew it all. She loves life, is friends with many, she praises God in singing even though we do not understand her words. She loves going to church and we are still witnessing to many because of her story. To God be all praise, and we rejoice in our salvation.
The needy and the humble are people who suffer oppression for the Lord’s sake, bearing their affliction with a godly spirit. These are the ones that God has not forgotten. Death is depicted like an earthly city, surrounded by a wall, where people are held captive, hence the reference to the gates of death.
Father God, thank you for Alicia. She certainly is the joy of the Lord. She loves you and lives her special life for You. She is definitely one of Your little angels. Guard and protect her as You always have. Thank you for allowing Clara and I the awesome privilege of looking after her and to be able to share Christ with countless people because of her story and Your story.
