July 11, 2020 CHOOSE TO FEAR
There is so much to be afraid of right now if we think too much about the issues in this world. There are killings. There is a virus we know little about. There is our unstable economy. Our leaders continue to bash one another rather than show they are really trying to solve the issues in our country. We have a lot to fear if we focus on the world. But there is hope when we remember we are to fear only God.
Fear is probably one of the most misunderstood words in the Bible. Fearing God is a good thing. It means we are to revere, respect, trust, and submit to Him. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. God wants us to be wise and we can be when we stay in His word. His word instructs us on what to do in life.
God tells us we are temporary residents on this earth and we are to live as He wants us to live according to His will and not give in to the ways of the world. When we focus on fearing God and keep Him in our hearts and minds, we will live as He calls us to live during our brief time on earth. We are here on earth only for a little while. Let’s be sure we are living a godly life and fearing only Him.
1 Peter 1:17c “So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as ‘temporary residents.’” (NLT)
1. Write about how you fear God.
2. List ways people know you are a God-fearing believer.
3. Know fearing God means to hate what He hates.
4. Remember fearing God means to respect and obey Him.
Dear Lord, we know we are not to fear anything or anyone in this world but we sometime still get anxious about all that is happening right now. Help us to remember to fear only You. Remind us that fearing You is not about being afraid but about respecting You, trusting You and submitting our lives to You. Help us to remember to fear only You and You will give us all we need. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
God gives us many instructions on how we are to fear Him. If we don’t understand how to fear God, we need to get into His word.
Proverb 8:13 “To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.” (NIV)
Psalm 2:11 “Serve the Lord with reverent fear, and rejoice with trembling.” (NLT)
Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.” (CSB)
Psalm 112:1 “Praise the Lord! How joyful are those who fear the Lord and delight in obeying his commands.” (NLT)
We aren’t to fear man but instead fear God by obeying His word. Then we won’t fear this world at all.
Psalm 118:6 “The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” (NLT)
