July 9, 2020 THE BENEFITS OF DISCIPLINE
We have possibly been on both the receiving end and the giving end of discipline. Discipline isn’t enjoyable while we going through it but it does have many positive attributes. First, as parents, we discipline our children because we love them. If we didn’t love them we wouldn’t care what they did. Second, discipline brings correction. After a time or two of doing wrong, discipline shows us what wrong we did and we have a chance to stop doing the wrong and start over new. Finally, discipline helps us grow. Our past discipline has made us who we are today. We have learned and we have grown.
God disciplines those He loves to teach us. Because of discipline from God, we can gain wisdom and understanding. We can learn to obey and follow Him. He continuously guides us with His word and when we stray, He gently brings us back to Him. However, when we get completely off-track and begin to live as the world lives, He gives us discipline to remind us who He is and how much He loves us.
Discipline is for our good even though it may sting for a bit. Our role is to pray through it and learn from it so we can grow spiritually as believers and continue to do God’s will. We can look back on our lives and see how great God loves us because He chose to discipline us when we did wrong.
Proverbs 3:11-12 “My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” (NIV)
1. Write how God has disciplined you.
2. List what you learned from it.
3. Know God loves those He disciplines.
4. Stay in God’s word and rejoice knowing He cares for you.
Dear Lord, thank You for disciplining us. Thank You for loving us so much and caring enough to show us when we are going down a wrong path. Thank You for Your corrective discipline when we do wrong. Help us to learn from what You teach us in Your word. We want to praise You even as we are being disciplined knowing it is because You care. Thank You for leading us and loving us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Proverbs 29:19 “Servants cannot be corrected by mere words; though they understand, they will not respond.” (NIV)
Psalm 94:12-13 “Joyful are those you discipline, Lord, those you teach with your instructions. You give them relief from troubled times until a pit is dug to capture the wicked.” (NLT)
Hebrews 12:11 “No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” (CSB)
Psalm 99:8 “O Lord our God, you answered them. You were a forgiving God to them, but you punished them when they went wrong.” (NLT)
We can look back on our lives and see how great God loves us because He chose to discipline us when we did wrong.
Psalm 119:67 “I used to wander off until you disciplined me; but now I closely follow your word.” (NLT)
