Thought and Prayer for Wednesday, July 8, 2020

There should a book about this. Getting revenge. Maybe there is. So many people are really good at getting even with those who have hurt them. Some even live to do this on a regular basis. There are those who go to extremes to get revenge because they feel they have been treated wrongly. Others seek revenge for what they feel is injustice. However, retaliation is not the answer. It doesn’t solve the problem. Getting revenge isn’t at all what we should do if we want to make things right.

We have many options to take rather than seeking revenge. First and foremost, God tells us we should leave the revenge up to Him. He will pay them back according to their actions. Second, we are to conquer evil by doing good. We have heard the saying “kill them with kindness.” It works! Third, we are to help them. Yes, help them. We should seek out what they need and serve them. Finally, we are to pray for them and show them love.

Yes, revenge is wrong yet easy. Doing the right thing takes inner strength. But God can help us. God has other ways for us to treat those who do wrong and it is much for satisfying than any actions we could think up on our own.

Romans 12:19 “Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, ‘I will take revenge; I will pay them back,’ says the Lord.” (NLT)

1. Write about those who have hurt you.
2. List what actions God tells you to take.
3. Remember revenge is not the answer.
4. Pray for your actions to be in line with God’s word.

Dear Lord, so many times we feel wronged in life. We feel as if others mistreat us on a daily basis. Help us to remember not to take revenge but to seek Your word for guidance. We understand doing wrong back to them will not help the situation at all. Please help us to remember to put revenge in Your hands and follow Your word on what we are to do to show them Your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

We are not to seek to conquer evil with more evil. Two wrongs do not make a right.

Romans 12:21 “Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.” (CSB)

If we have enemies, we should seek out what they need and help them to show them we care despite what they have done to us.

Proverbs 25:21-22 “If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.” (NIV)

We are to love even those who do wrong to us and we are to pray for them.

Matthew 5:44 “But I tell you to love your enemies and pray for anyone who mistreats you.” (CEV)
