July 3, 2020 WHY PRIDE MATTERS
There are two kinds of pride in this world. There is pride of a job well done which requires something to be accomplished. We can take pride in what we did or be proud about what those around us have done. That type of pride is good because we did something and felt good about what we did. However, there is another type of pride in this world. People feel proud about who they are and where their came from but their pride is in themselves and not in their accomplishments. Their pride is in their heritage.
Pride matters to those who want to prove something. Pride matters to those who want to show why their lives or their beliefs are important. Pride matters to those who are hurting inside due to past wrongs yet they want to make things right. Taking pride in what one has done or accomplished is okay…to a point; however, we have to be careful not to go too far. Pride is also defined as arrogance, conceit, superiority and vanity. This foolish pride can cause destruction. Destruction for self and others.
1 John 2:15-17 “Don’t love the world or anything that belongs to the world. If you love the world, you cannot love the Father. Our foolish pride comes from this world, and so do our selfish desires and our desire to have everything we see. None of this comes from the Father. The world and the desires it causes are disappearing. But if we obey God, we will live forever.” (CEV)
James 4:6b “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (NLT)
1. Write what you know about pride.
2. List people you know who have selfish pride.
3. Know God wants you to witness to them.
4. Tell them about God and His love for them.
Dear Lord, we don’t understand how some can be so proud that they won’t humble themselves before You. We don’t understand the violence that comes from the pride movements. However, we do know You can help. You can help us witness to them and remind them of the consequences of pride. You can help us break the barriers between us so we can share Your love with them. Help us, we pray. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
We will all be judged by our actions. Let’s put pride aside and live to serve others.
Isaiah 2:11 “Human pride will be brought down, and human arrogance will be humbled. Only the Lord will be exalted on that day of judgment.” (NLT)
Psalm 10:4 “In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.” (NIV)
Isaiah 13:11 “I will punish this evil world and its people because of their sins. I will crush the horrible pride of those who are cruel.” (CEV)
Pride can lead to destruction. We are to remind others of the dangers of pride.
Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.” (NLT)
