June 28, 2020 WHY WE PRAISE

We all like to be praised. Being praised for something we did makes us feel good about our words or actions. Compliments and recognition affirm we are doing good. However, just as it is for actors, our praise is only as good as our last performance. After a while, the recognition fades and the people move on to the next great thing. Praise from others is only temporary and seeking praise from others can only lead us down a wrong path. Rather than focus on getting praise, we should give it.

If we want to help others, we should find good about them and acknowledge that good. That would certainly lift them up and encourage them. But first and foremost, we should praise God. Praising God should be part of our daily lives. When we praise Him, we acknowledge Him for who He is, what He has done, His power and greatness, and salvation. Praising God reminds us of who we are and our purpose in this world. We are not to seek praise but to give it. We are to give praise to others and to God.

Psalm 150 “Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heaven! Praise him for his mighty works; praise his unequaled greatness! Praise him with a blast of the ram’s horn; praise him with the lyre and harp! Praise him with the tambourine and dancing; praise him with strings and flutes! Praise him with a clash of cymbals; praise him with loud clanging cymbals. Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord! Praise the Lord!” (NLT)

1. Write what you do to praise God.
2. List what the Bible says about praise.
3. Know only God can save you and He deserves your praise.
4. Remember to praise Him daily for who He is and all He has done.

Dear Lord, we love You. We thank You for all You do. We praise Your name alone. We know we are only human and live in a world that is not about You. However, we have the freedom to praise Your name. You offer salvation to us and eternal life. We praise You for Your gifts and Your love. Help us to share Your Good News with others and may our actions be good so others will see Your work and praise You as well. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

God produced in us the ability to give praise to Him for all He is and all He does.

Philippians 1:11 “May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.” (NLT)

Jonah 2:9 “But I will offer sacrifices to you with songs of praise, and I will fulfill all my vows. For my salvation comes from the Lord alone.” (NLT)

Hebrews 13:15 “Therefore, through him let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name.” (CSB)

We are to praise God for all He does and tell others about the salvation He offers to all people.

Psalm 96:2 “Sing to the Lord; praise his name. Each day proclaim the good news that he saves.” (NLT)

True. While we don't understand their motives, we can know they are hurting for whatever reason. I feel there is some good in them deep down that we can't see because they were created in God's image just as we were. They may believe what they are doing is for a good cause and are just confused by whatever has happened to them in their past. Some people believe they are doing things for a good cause but going about it all wrong.

We may not know them personally but we can pray they will be surrounded by godly people who can encourage them. We can pray godly people who really know them can follow God's direction in helping them. We can pray they will turn to God and He will heal them. There are some who don't want our help but we can pray for them.

My problem in all of this is that sometimes there is no good in some people to praise. We offer help but they will not take it. The rioters, those who burn buildings, tear down statues (even talking about Jesus now), abusing police, killing people. They refuse to listen, refuse our help. I may be jaded and it may be against God's wishes but I have given up on these people. I know God hasn't but people are frightened just to go near these people.
