Texas slave holders and State officials (including Rangers) wanted to continue oppressing not only slaves but poor folks as well. That's why the Army had to come to Galveston to officially announce ALL Texas slaves were Free as of over 2 years ago (at that time).
And many of those folks' offspring today still carry their racist bigotry with them, even though Juneteenth is an official State of Texas Holiday. I have a racist uncle, a prominent Southern Baptist of reputation, occasional foreign mission worker in Europe, who owned rentals in Fort Worth area. He despises the poor as well as UnWhites. He isn't even subtle about it. As a Christian I am ashamed of his racial and denominational bigotry. My wife and I are poor but we're family. So he won't help us, but he'll pray we find God's Will and get well off financially.
As a Christian I know there are two kinds of humans, and both deserve respect for being, love, assistance, plain truth and real healing: Sinners, and Sinners saved by the grace of God. And you can't tell who is who by looking at them, but God knows who are His own.
We are supposed to be God's priests and emissaries to the world, being in the world but not of the world. Aliens and Strangers is how God speaks of it in Scripture. Jesus didn't talk about supporting the Roman oppression of the peoples, he didn't observe religious myths of the Hebrews turned into Jews, and he openly hung out with all the wrong crowd doing justice, loving mercy, walking humbly.
I celebrate human freedom even though humans are still oppressed not only in the USA but globally. I am embarrassed that our nation has become isolationist, led by ignorant bigotry as well as racism, and divided by extremists of all stripes.
But I can bbq and celebrate with my neighbors out by the swimming pool, with our masks and/or safe distancing. Bexar County law starting Monday demands masks for workers and customers required in any business. Fines for any noncompliance - to business owner as well as customers.
But I choose to love, to befriend, to share. I hope you will as well. Next year I plan on visiting mission churches on the way to celebrating Juneteenth in Galveston area with my 80yo parents who are moving down from Washington. And when I say Washington I mean the only plain Washington in our nation. The other is the District of Columbia. We can say "D.C." if you want to identify it with abbreviation but just saying "Washington" is not an abbreviation of Washington, D.C.
Hello? Stop allowing the sloganeers and media folks attempting to use coded phrases to determine our usage of language and choice of words.
Thanks. BTW, if you disagree with me please let me know how I'm belligerent, ignorant, or otherwise misinformed and how to investigate a better frame of mind.
Off to the poolside.
Ciao for laters, Chow for now.
