Perfect Peace. June 19 2020
“ Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will quadruple your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7. NIV.
It’s no secret ; the life of any committed Christian is not easy. God’s Word tells us it won’t be. So, how do we have confidence and stay in “ perfect peace” when we are up to our eyeballs in stuff and we can’t , yet see our way out?
During our first year on the mission field, we were hit with a barrage of stuff: learning a new language and culture, working through culture stress, volcanic eruptions, missing home, getting to know a ton of new people, and my wife getting sick from something she ate. Everything was different and difficult. Just to go and buy groceries required enormous energy and courage. Anxiety was running high.
Throughout all of it, I continually asked God to give me peace. I knew that I had to do more than just ask for peace and passively receive it. I first had to trust that He was in control, that He allowed these things for a reason and because of that, I had to thank Him for the trials, all of them. Despite so many obstacles I thanked Him for every one. I had a peace that truly surpassed my understanding. I did not always understand God’s reasons for those trials. I still don’t. I was holding on to one thing, “The Lord God, the Rock eternal.” Isaiah 26:3-4.
As God’s servant, this is one thing I will continue to strive for because it’s in those moments that we offer a powerful witness to those around us. It’s also an opportunity to strip Satan of his power and give it back to God as glory instead.
I want to look back on tough times, on the dark times, and know I stood firm on God’s promises, that I trusted Him, and that I glorified Him, not just after the trial but through the trial. I know the peace of God will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
🙏. Father God thank You for providing the peace that passes all understanding. I don’t always know why I go through trials but I do trust that You are in it. Your love for me helps me to keep going. Thank You for Jesus in whose name I pray.
