Balancing Love. June 16 2020
“ Love the Lord Your God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul and with all of your strength. The second is this. Love thy neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Mark 12:29-31. NIV.
Do we love God as much as we are commanded to. With all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength? Sure we go to church and we worship Him in songs and hearing the Word. Sure we quickly do our devotions every day ( or at least most days ) We pray before our meals and when we go to bed. But is that loving God with all of our being?
Do we take time to be with Him for extended periods of time? When was the last time we took time for a spiritual retreat where you and God we’re alone by yourselves? What do we make priority in our lives? So often it’s our job, our family, or even sports and leisure.
I need to follow Jesus’ example throughout the gospel of loving. An implication of” loving my neighbour as myself, is that I am to love myself. Jesus often withdrew to a lonely place and prayed. Part of that time in solitude was to take care of Himself, to love Himself. The problem is that I frequently cross the line of this loving self into self love and wander into selfishness. That is quite the opposite of loving self.
Trying to find balance in loving God, others and self can be tricky. I have found its fundamental to love God as much as He has commanded. When I do I grow in my love of others as well as my love for self.
Take time to be holy. Speak often to the Lord. Spend much time in secret and dwell on His Word. Make friends with God’s children, and help those who are week. Forgetting in nothing your promises to keep.
Love for God should naturally issue in love for others who are made in the image of God.
🙏. Father, I want to know and love You better every day. Help me to set aside time for you. Let it be a priority in my life. Help me to love Your children in a way that brings glory to You and help me to love my self instead of self love. Thank You for the example Christ gave to us in the gospels. Help me to be more like Him every day. It is in His name that I pray.
