June 11, 2020 STAY SHARP!
When we think of people who are dull, we think of them being boring, unexciting and blah. They may not contribute to a conversation or a meeting or they may go on and on about unrelated and uninteresting things. Others appear lifeless and comatose. They don’t seem to be of much use to anyone. A dull ax isn’t much good to us either. Without sharpening, we can’t really use it for its purpose. Dull people and objects aren’t worth much at all. In fact, they could hinder us from getting things done.
In our spiritual life, it is the same. When we are spiritually dull, we are indifferent about the word of God. Being spiritually dull means we aren’t seeking to grow or sharpen our spiritual ax, so to speak. We are going through the motions without really contributing to others and not of good use to anyone. We use our setbacks as an excuse not to grow spiritually yet God’s word is exactly what we need. We should make a plan to stay in God’s word, pray daily, seek wisdom, obey Him, love others, and seek ways to stay sharp and strong to do the will of God.
Hebrews 6:11-12 “Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true. Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance.” (NLT)
1. Write how you stay spiritually strong.
2. List what God tells you to do in His word.
3. Be intentional about growing daily in the will of God.
4. Pray, seek God’s will and obey only Him.
Dear Lord, we let life get in our way sometimes. We step away from You to do what we feel is best. We move away from You when we get distracted from all the issues in the world. We stop reading Your word. We quit talking to You daily. We get out of the habit of going to church. We become spiritually dull. Forgive us and help us to turn away from the word and turn back to You. We want to obey You and share Your love as You call us to do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
If we turn our eyes and ears away from God, we will grow spiritually dull.
Hebrews 5:11 “There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen.” (NLT)
If we want to stay spiritually strong, we need to commit to God and allow Him to strengthen us.
2 Chronicles 16:9a “The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” (NLT)
Seeking the will and wisdom of God will sharpen our spiritual lives and help us succeed.
Ecclesiastes 10:10 “Using a dull ax requires great strength, so sharpen the blade. That’s the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed.” (NLT)
