Remembering a hometown soldier

Monday, May 25, 2020

This young man went to elementary school with my sister.

Klaus Dieter Schlieben

It was a tragedy when he was killed in Vietnam, only 20 years old.

Remembered as a kind young man.

I have not been to the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC, but to the one that travels around the country when it was right up the road about a mile away.

It was a surreal evening, with a huge full moon on the rise, lightning in the background luminaries lit and bagpipes playing.

Paul Galanti a former POW from Virginia, spoke and my former long time boyfriend was in uniform, as were many others there to pay respects.

All the names on the wall... I can't tell you the feeling, but I imagine some of you have had it before.

So as we remember all who have given the ultimate sacrifice this day, I would like to remember our hometown soldier with the closest connection.

You will not be forgotten.

Those walls, both the one in DC and the traveling one, make me cry.

I’m old enough to have memories of the Vietnam War. My brother looking in the paper to see if his draft number had come up. Boys he grew up with who went to fight. The nightly news reports.

I went to the Vietnam Memorial in DC. I walked along, reading names, panel after panel, row after row, but then I looked up and saw the reflection of myself on the stone.

These names were people who died for me; for all of us. For our country.

What a lovely tribute to that very young man. So many young ones lost their lives with no chance of fulfilling their dreams.
