Firestorm

Wednesday, March 25, 2020

Firestorm burst into the theaters in 1998. Howie Long (the American football player) starred as smokejumper Jesse Graves. The opening act had Jesse & his mentor, Wynt Perkins (Scott Glenn), in Wyoming. They rescue a woman trapped in forest fire, but Wynt is injured & forced to retire. Some months later, an arsonist sets fires in the forest. The arsonist was friends of a man in prison, Randall Shaye (William Forsythe) who had hidden stolen money in the forest 4 years earlier. They knew prisoners are frequently drafted to fight fires. Sure enough, they volunteer to join the fire fighters, but escape.Shaye killed his roommate & steals his ID. The escapes pretend to be Canadian firefighters so they can hunt for the $37 million that was hidden. They kidnap a female bird watcher, Jennifer (Susie Amis). Jesse figures out they were escapees.Bad man Shaye continues to pick off his team of prisoners one @ a time. Too bad for him, the money was all burnt up. Meanwhile, another wildfire is approaching the first fire, & if they join, there would be no oxygen left in the area (I’m just getting my synopsis from Wikipedia here - I have no idea how this works.) Wynt has been helping Jesse to save Jennifer. There’s a bus full of fire fighters & real prisoners that Wynt is trying to evacuate from the fire zone. Jesse realizes Wynt had set the other fire, trying to show they need more trained firefighters. Jesse forgives him. Wynt squares off with Shaye, shooting him in the leg, but Shaye kills Wynt. Jesse & Jenifer end up in a boat on the lake & Shaye finds them. Jesse throws an axe @ Shaye but only knocks him off the boat. Jesse & Jen use the boat as an air pocket to breathe & keep from burning up.Shaye swims under the boat & starts shooting holes in the boat. Jesse & Shaye grapple, Jesse sticks Shaye’s head through the hole (the bullets he fired made the hole). Shaye burns to death. Jesse & Jen survive. The eggs she had collected earlier (bird watcher, remember?) hatch. Cheep, cheep! Aww ... (I think I have a headache now) BTW, if you didn’t see it, you’re not alone. It got terrible reviews. I didn’t see it, either.

Ring of Fire, 1963, Johnny Cash

Love is a burnin' thing
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire

I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire

I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire

The taste of love is sweet
When hearts like ours meet
I fell for you like a child
Oh, but the fire went wild

I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher

And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire

I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire
