Staying Active at Home

Monday, March 16, 2020

With the spread of coronavirus, I am staying hunkered down at home for a while. This has been recommended by local health officials for those in my age bracket (over 65). And the decision has been helped by the many restrictions put in place to control the spread of the virus. Locally, the library and community centers are closed; my gym classes are cancelled; restaurants and bars are closed except for takeout food; the ski area is closed; all large gatherings are cancelled.

But, I do have a choice in the situation. I can sit and watch TV and brood, or I can be busy and active and healthy at home. For myself, I’ve created a list of activities to check each time I catch myself doing nothing. Here’s my list of suggestions to myself. Please let me know if you have activity that is useful for yourself!

1. Play my guitar. Try to learn one new song each day
2. Paint watercolor
3. Try a new art/ craft project
4. Read a book
5. Take an online class
6. Cook a new healthy recipe with food currently in the kitchen
7. Contact friends and family by phone
8. Do a long delayed boring task. Here are my tasks ( one a day would be good!)
Mend clothes; alter too big clothes; clear out and clean back bedroom closet/ cabinet/ dresser; clean and organize garage; clear everything out of pantry, clean and toss dated items.
9. Get outdoors at least daily, even when my allergies are bad
10. Exercise daily with a mix of cardio, strength training and yoga. I’ll use some online videos to mix things up.

Today my outdoor exercise was shoveling snow. We have had an exceptionally low snow year, but it decided to start snowing on Sunday and it hasn’t stopped yet. Here’s a photo of my backyard. It got another 3 inches after the photo.

It was less than a week ago that I was hiking around Suttle Lake with my friend Hanne. That was before all the restrictions and shut downs were in place. The hike is in the mountains, but there was no snow on the trail. How things have changed! Here are a couple of photos from the hike.

So do whatever you need to stay healthy and active and fit during these trying times.
