Made it out! Bridge run day...
Wednesday, February 26, 2020
I'm not sure why, but I had decided a few days back that today was going to need to be a treadmill day. Maybe the weather forecast wasn't promising. But, I awoke to 46 degrees and negligible wind. Cloudy, but that's actually preferred for running in those temps (at least by me).
Of course it must be an outside day in those conditions! I had "interval workout" penciled into my mental plan, but the mild bit of wind was made the other direction from my normal interval workout spot (outdoor paths on the campus of a local university - not a track per se, but easy to make loops of approximately convenient distances like 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, 1 mile for interval work) more appealing.
Sooo... bridge day! I decided to flip workouts and do a combination of hillwork and tempo run. It's been a while since I ran the Ben Franklin Fridge (from Philly to NJ, across the Delaware River - the pedestrian walkway goes up, up, up for 3/4 mile, then down for 3/4 mile, turn, repeat). The views are great - coming back and seeing the Philly skyline with the tops of the building hidden by fog, seeing stretches of the Delaware River trail on the Philly side (Cherry Street Pier, etc.), etc. - and doing it at a hard pace all the way gave me the tempo part of the workout, with the added bonus of downhill speedwork in addition to the uphill.
Lovely day for a run. Now I'm plotting how to get out for a walk later for my extra fitness minutes (having a destination/task makes it easier to get myself to do it)...
Yesterday I almost let the day slip by with fulfilling my extra minutes challenge, but then I got in a good workout in the late evening with my posture exercises (which I haven't done in far too long) followed by some upper body strength exercises using a resistance band. Since I definitely need to bring strength training back into my life, that was the perfect way to get in the minutes - and needs to be penciled into my daily plan 2-3x per week going forward!
Now to the coffee... and more work!
