My Expired Baking Supply Pantry
Saturday, December 21, 2019
Today I made some banana bread to give to a young grandson who loves it. It was the only holiday baking I’m doing this year because we are traveling to our son’s home where his wife will have plenty of baked holiday treats on hand.
But while waiting for the bread to come out of the oven I started checking the expiration dates on my baking supplies. I was shocked to find that most everything was out of date! It’s apparently been a couple of years since I baked much. Yes, my flour was fine, but most of the other ingredients needed to be replaced if I were to start baking. Out with the corn meal, some scone mix, and the spelt and cake flour. Out with a lot of other things.
Reflecting on this ordinary day and process of ‘decluttering’ my pantry I realize this is because I eat so differently now. I eat fresh produce and healthy proteins. I keep an amazing spice cabinet. It’s not that I never eat carbs, but I eat them sparingly. So right now I have a lot of empty canisters on the bottom shelf. It makes me feel all light and Sparky (-:
