Our kiddos were back at school today, and actually on time. The oldest (8) quite happily told me that the lady from children's division of family services came and got them and he got to "get away from Mommy for a whole day!!!" He was very excited about it. He was also thrilled to be clean and have his glasses, which have been missing for about a month. Little sister (6) has been crying all morning because she doesn't want to go to foster care. She was happy that the nice lady from children's division bought them a pizza from Casey's and some Cheetoh's before taking them to Grandma's house. Said they hadn't eaten since they were at school on Monday, and didn't eat most of the days over Thanksgiving break. Little Brother (5) said they had fun with the nice lady who fed them and played with them. They say Mommy and Daddy have to clean the house and do a bunch of other stuff before they can go home, and they don't know where the lady is going to take them after school today. Not sure where the 3 year old and 1 year old are today, but at least they should be safe and fed.
I hate to see a family split up at Christmas time, but anything is better than the conditions those kids have been surviving in. Hard to call it living when they are fending for themselves the majority of the time. We (teachers) have been feeding them, giving them extra food to take home, providing their coats and shoes, giving them a change of clothes and washing theirs while their at school, treating them for head lice, providing all their school supplies, etc., etc., etc., since school began. They need to be parented and loved by someone at home. We are praying for a foster family that is willing and able to take all 5 so they won't have to be separated, and that the parents will be put in rehab or sent back to jail. Surely abuse and neglect are a parole violation, but maybe not. Mostly praying that this whole mess gets cleaned up.
