Why I Seldom Spark Anymore

Saturday, November 02, 2019

I'm not upset about anything to do with SP, I want to make that perfectly clear. I've just decided to face reality and stop the insanity. I've been sparking for years, and if it actually worked for me, I would be at goal weight and maintaining. I'm far from either. You know the definition of insanity...doing the same thing and expecting different results. So, I'm done.

Truth be told, SP is my social media of choice. I'm not big on facebook or any of the others. This is where I spend my time socializing. Hours and hours and hours of time. If I want my health to improve, something has got to give. I have to find something new that is more productive than the socializing I do here.

SP is like an addiction for me. Many of the things I do on it seem to be more about getting the points than anything else. The only true benefits I have received are the sparkfriends I have made. While I love my sparkfriends, I would probably be better off making friends I can interact with face to face. I have lots of acquaintances and co-workers, be no friends that I socialize with. I confide to people here, but there is no one I can really talk to in person. I recognize that this is not healthy, and I need to spend more time in the real world.

I still plan to keep my account open, and will visit from time to time, but not nearly as frequently as I have in the past. No more challenges for me. They just end up being another time suck with no physical rewards.

I know changes have to be made if I want my health to improve, and I'm struggling to do that. I follow guidelines, but they just aren't working for me. Research says to burn more calories than we consume. I have tracked religiously for years, and when I pour over those records, they show that I consistently burn 500-1000 more calories per day than I take in, yet I do not lose weight. I'm at a loss as to what to do.

My first plan of action is to cut way back on computer time other than what I have to do for work. No more hours of computer for entertainment, unless I'm too sick to do anything else. I do plan to do a little bit of sparking, but I have got to get the mindless hours of it under control.

You're correct. I do spark daily but I can see how you get wrapped up and spend way to much time. I love playing games on my tablet. That's my downfall. I'm addicted

I also spend way too much time on Sparkpeople but enjoy the friendships. So I understand. Still, try to stop by from time to time, as you will be missed.

You will be missed but I do agree with you that the friends on here are virtual and face to face friends are important to have.

I completely understand. Once you start one thing on Spark it leads to another and another and so on. I’ve cut right back too. It does take time out of the day. I will miss you Monkey Lady, but understand.
May you be blessed everyday, Hugs and Love ❤️ emoticon

It will be sad not to see you around. But I do understand. I am in the same boat about weight. This year I was diagnosed with hypothyroid. After being tested yesterday, I will have an increase in my dosage. That explains some of my weight issues. I have lost 20 pounds over the past 12 years, since I joined Spark. However, the weight loss has been slow. I still need to lose 11 or 12 pounds to be at my goal weight.

    Take care!!

Sorry to see you go. But I totally get it. I took a 5-year hiatus from SP having just recently returned. Being present in the real world is important. Do what's best for you and I hope to see you post from time to time. Take care.

I just realized I was telling you the things I myself should be doing...
    but am not.
Then everything I had written disappeared .... just like magic.
the abbreviated restore of what I had said is this..
find groups whose primary focus is something you are interested in ... and join the club.
If it turns out it isn't what you want.. on well, you tried.
I live in a small town about 10 miles from a medium sized town..
my local library and its staff seem to have finger on the pulse of what groups meet when and where.
maybe your local library is as knowledgeable .!!

So much of what you said rings true for me also.
I think I am addicted to earning points... like that makes me a better person when it truly doesn't really add any value to my life. But I do enjoy my Spark Friends, maybe too much?

you need to do what is best for your health. i understand where you are coming from.

this summer i gave up on my health then i had a rude awakening when i went to the drs. and ...now i am trying to set my sights on my health and spending time here with sp. my frame of mind was never worrying about points. i focus on exercise minutes and steps i get in my day. i have a very stressful life at home. life with hubby isn't good and that is why i had given up as i didn't care if i died. the dr. appointment helped with the scare so i asked to see a dietitian to help me and honestly it was to get hubby on track i needed to be on. unfortunately he couldn't go to the appointment, but i was sure to get printed papers for hubby to see. this has helped me so much. i have been trying to watch portion control and adding more salads and veggies in my daily meals. one of my biggest problems was stress eating in the evenings. i'm working on that. i use being on the computer as a stress relief also. by the way i have lost some weight since dr. appointment and me trying to keep to diet.

good luck in what is going to work for you. will miss your blogs, but you need to take care of you and your health. that comes first.

I totally understand and agree with you as I have many of the same issues. Have to admit that I've missed you a lot. This is the only social media I do and can't believe how cyber friends can come to mean so much. Whatever you do, it has to be what is best for you. I'm glad you're not going to close your account and will check in from time to time. Thanks for catching up on my blogs. I also miss your sense of humor. Have a wonderful holiday season.

You are so right, SP is more of a social thing for me as well and yes, we’d be better off making friends “in real life” and spend our time away from the computer.
I will miss your blogs and our interaction but you need to do what works fir you.
All the best with your journey, hope you pop in here now and then with an update on how you are doing.

You have to do what's right for you hun, I shall miss your blogs but wish you luck in finding something that works for you.
For sure less time sat typing and more time being active will be a positive change.
I've found an hour on here in the morning then being on my feet most of the day doing something or other (apart from sitting for lunch LOL) has been my salvation.

    Keep in touch!!
Have a great weekend my friend emoticon
