Going in the hole in the ground

My father often used the expression “well you are the one going into the hole in the ground” when people complained about their health while continuing to do unhealthy things. Both mom and her sister (who was 10 years older than my mother were diagnosed when they, respectively, turned 50.

My aunt, decided it was time to make some changes and lived to be 80. She carefully watched her diet and added in some exercise in her attempts to stay off taking insulin. And, it worked! Mom, on the other hand, did nothing to help herself and now complains that she has to have five needles a day. Now, at 80 she blames everyone except herself! It is frustrating to watch but I have learned, albeit very slowly, that nothing I say or do is going to change her.

Thankfully, I have not been yet diagnosed with diabetes. Maybe I will and maybe I won’t, but I like to think I will have my aunt’s mindset. Lately, I have had to make some decisions about the antidepressants I have been offered. My psychiatrist wants to add in another to the one I am taking and while I have no issues with taking medication for my mental health, I do have a problem if those same medications made me feel worse physically.

It can’t be physical health vs. mental health battle, it simply can’t! My overall well-being is comprised of both of these “healths” and they have to learn to “play nice with others”. One cannot take precedent over the other because then the see-saw starts teetering too far to one side and over I go.

The latest add-in made me jittery, dizzy and always hungry. Luckily, I had (with the help of my pharmacist) done some research, and I knew the main side effects of this drug are weight gain and elevated blood sugars. No, thanks.

Now, I’m not saying don’t take the medication your doctors want you to. What I am saying is, “you are the one going in the hole in the ground” so you have to educate yourself and do what is best for your overall well-being.

I have to re-evaluate my mental health and ask what can I do to help myself. Is there anything I can be doing or trying a bit harder? I know walking helps me so I have to ensure I keep up with it. Sewing helps me so I have to make more of an effort to spend more time in my sewing room. When I eat regularly and choose wisely, I feel so much better.

    Great blog and awesome that you are doing self advocating. A healthy diet and staying active helps. I do hope you don't get diabetes too. Take each day as it come and don't worry about tomorrow. I work with that daily and it's helped me through much.

    This is such a great message to me right now. My husband has had to start taking medication for anxiety - and the drug is apparently an anti-depressant. Plus he's taking a second medication to help with the effects of the first. He is suppose to take himself off the second but he's reluctant to do that. His personality is more like - let it go and hope it gets better. I tell him he needs to actually DO things to help the medication work the way it's suppose to work but so far he's not listening to me.

    I'm glad you're being an advocate for yourself. Too often, specialists get tunnel-vision and don't prescribe holistically.
