Guidepost #6: cultivating creativity

Thursday, October 17, 2019

My mother used to define boredom as the space between "busy-ness" and creativity. Brene Brown actually juxtaposes creativity against comparison and competition in this chapter of "The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are".

Well! As a person who discovered the depths of her competitiveness only through much weeping and gnashing of teeth, and finally acknowledged this piece of herself... this was a bit of a wake up. Yes, I kind of do creative things... but I also do WAY too much comparing to measure myself. This is a good work proposition for me... letting go of comparison and just accepting me for who I am. Not seeking approval from others (yes, even y'all, fellow Sparkies), nor rebelliously rejecting the values that we share, but just appreciating that we are each unique.

And that uniqueness comes out in creativity. Believe it or not, writing these blogs is an exercise in a certain level of creativity, even in the way we tell our own stories. We shall see, as time goes on whether any new or OLD hobbies crop up as I contemplate this guidepost, but for now, I'm just acknowledging it is there!

As for today: had my workout with the coach, and warned him I needed to go a little easy to favor my left arm, where the flu shot got inserted yesterday. It was just what I needed... a gentler workout with bands for the upper body, and the regular intensity for the legs. Goldilocks couldn't have got it more "just right".

Yesterday I had indulged in cooking a big pot of veggie soup (ice box cleanout veggies) and that was today's lunch. Then I did something meaningful: took my brothers 2018 Boston Medal and Jacket down to the shop and ordered their marking. She promised the jacket back by Halloween, without rush... so that means if it's done on time, I'll have his name and race time on his 2018 Boston Marathon Celebration jacket in time to wear it in NYC for that 5K on November 2 (if it seems right for the weather, that is).

Also got the car washed... something cheerful about that, right?

Here's hoping YOUR Thursday, October 17, 2019 had moments of cheer, self-nourishment, and meaning. After all, it's the only one we'll ever get. And we are worth taking care of, worth living a wholehearted life... each and every one of us! emoticon emoticon
