just askin’ … two questions

Sunday, September 29, 2019

I’ve been walking for 7 weeks now … thank you, thank you OverWorkedJanet. Through her … encouragement … I got up and off the couch. These walks are s-l-o-w paced, no marathon training for me. I’m moving into 50-minute sessions tomorrow.

Once again, my insurance offered free the Naturally Slim (NS) program to those who applied and were accepted.

I did the program once before … I say I DID it before … but not for real and not for long.

I didn’t understand alllll that the program offered nor how long it actually was available to me … and it sounded so … simple and hokey.

So, with NS, along with reading … Intuitive Eating (IE) by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch … it’s been a topsy turvy kinda week. I am reading IE very s-l-o-w-l-y … it’s not a novel … it’s self-help and that takes time. Thank you WaterMellen … please, please continue to share your journey!!!

Week 1 … eat ONLY when physically hungry, s-l-o-w-l-y chewing and consciously savoring SMALL bites putting your fork down between bites.

Eat only one item at a time and eat what you like the best on your plate first. Once you have satisfied your taste … move to your second favorite item on your plate not returning to the first … and so on.

The process of eating is to satisfy your taste and your fullness … and that only happens through eating slowly, consciously savoring each small bite.

Eat for 10 minutes then wait 5 minutes to see if you are still hungry then eat an additional 10+ minutes or what’s needed to … STOP eating when you are comfortable NOT stuffed.

It’s suggested to eat protein at each meal … along with anything you want. ANYTHING.

It’s not WHAT you eat, it’s WHEN and HOW.

So … two questions.

1) What does true physical hunger feel like to YOU??? What are your … signs of hunger???

2) What would you eat if you allowed yourself to eat ANYTHING you wanted … as long as you ate it when physically hungry and STOP when physically comfortable???

We learn from each other … we are NOT responsible for each other.

IE page 2 … Feeling like you don’t deserve to eat, because you’re overweight. WOW!!!

What would I eat? Home made bread toasted with butter. I limit myself to 1/2 slice a day of whole wheat - 45 calories.

What is hungry? Starts with feeling grumpy. Tummy starts to grumble. Headache coming on. Time to have a couple of crackers with a piece of cheese and maybe a small piece of fruit depending on my blood sugar. Doesn't happen too often as I try to eat a sensible meal at mealtime. More likely to happen if I didn't have enough protein at lunch.

Plain vegetables (not corn) sounds good.

Everything, no restrictions, but I have to think: Will eating that food help me reach my goal? Sometimes that is enough to change what I am thinking of eating. Other times, I eat the junk.

    Good questions!

My hunger cues are growling tummy, starting to have thoughts of food.

If I could eat ANYTHING as long as I stopped when I was physically comfortable, it would be bread. BUT bread doesn't agree with me. So . . . . that's really out. Otherwise, I am really content w/my food.

Since I started intermittent fasting I have learned sooo much about my body and hunger.
I can observe hunger and see that it comes and goes.
Most days I do not eat from 7-8 p.m. until 1-2-3 the next day, consuming only tea and coffee with cream.
    I feel grrreat!
I have never had a headache or shakiness or weakness at all.
Wish the scale made me as happy as the fasting does.

I'll be following YOUR information on eating..

I did fine eating what I wanted when someone else prepared my selections (my vacation).
Once home, I had less selection and some "tired" meltdowns of poor choices.

I'm learning what it leans to be full or hungry.

Sounds like you have been doing making great choices, and some great thinking too!

    1) What does true physical hunger feel like to YOU??? What are your … signs of hunger???
For me it is hunger pangs, rumbles, emptiness in the stomach (not in the entire body or the mind!), but I only take them as true hunger if they don't go away in 1-2 minutes.
Between my 3 generous meals, I very rarely feel real hunger..
I wish I could say the same about desire to eat and cravings!

    2) What would you eat if you allowed yourself to eat ANYTHING you wanted … as long as you ate it when physically hungry and STOP when physically comfortable???
    That's tricky!
I wold eat foods I CAN stop eating when physically comfortable.
Alas, some old favorites are clearly trigger food for me, and I would certainly have to avoid them if I did intuitive eating.
In fact, I'm better off avoiding them even when I'm planning and measuring my meals...
That leaves me with cooked whole grains, thick brown rye bread, legumes, nuts, seeds, olive oil, cheese, eggs... and of course lots of fruits and vegetables.

I wish you best of luck with IE and your walking streak!

WATERMELLEN's blogs on intuitive eating motivated me to check the book out of the library for the second time. I remember reading it when it was first published, and thinking at the time there was no way that would work for me. But now...I'm getting there, slowly.

I just read your 10/1 blog and came back to answer those questions.

    1) My stomach starts making "feed me" noises.

    2) Cheese. Nothing else comes close.

Thanks for the info! I get shaky and irritable when I am hungry. When it's really bad, my stomach hurts. I eat at 3-4 hour intervals now that add up to within my calorie range.

Yes, sometimes our habits is what is affecting the results on the scale. Interesting read ... I do believe sometimes we have to let go of old habits & replace with new ones.
