Second half of the school year starting

Monday, September 23, 2019

Classes start again tomorrow and I’m having the usual start-of-term nerves. I’ll go through this three more times, including this time, before teaching my last class as a full-time teacher in January 2021.

I like working, and I know I’ll feel a sense of satisfaction at the end of this week, but right now, I’m kind of glad I won’t have to go through these first weeks of nerves many more times. I like being busy, but working part time after I retire may be the best of both worlds. I could choose how busy I want to be, and there would be No - More - Meetings!! (Especially boring because they’re in Japanese, of course.)

About ten days to go until my DIL’s due date.

I was absent last week so missed this blog. Now it's a week later, and I hope the nerve-wracking part is mostly over. Starting new classes is exciting but stressful and suspenseful, I think, definitely harder than later on in the course. I hope it went well and that you were lucky enough to get good students who'll make your job fun.

It's great that you're planning to continue part-time! That will keep you young and energetic, and give you time away from home--so important in maintaining good relations with the people at home! I love being home, but too much togetherness is not good.

Oh yeah--meetings in Japan! I used to be on the PTA when my children were in school. OMG--meetings that could have wrapped up in 30 minutes might drag on for 2 hours, depending on who'd been designated committee head. Interestingly, I found that if the committee head had a job outside the house, meetings would end quickly, but if the committee head was a full-time housewife, the meetings would go on a really long time, I assume because she had a lot of free time. But I can imagine that even at your work place the meetings would be too long. My husband says the same about meetings at his workplace. I think they don't have a clear agenda or a planned ending time, and they're too vague and polite to get very much done.

I hope you have a great week. Isn't fall wonderful, not only because of the weather but also because there are so many national holidays? Whoopee!

Oooo - and now - less than a week till due date. How wonderful to welcome this new life into your world.

When I knew for sure when I was going to retire my attitude towards work changed. Though I still cared about what I did and how I did it - I cared less about what OTHER people thought about what and how I did things.

Enjoy these last few terms - but most importantly - enjoy that new baby.

So exciting to be anticipating your grandchild.

And "performance anxiety": I certainly never lost it either as a teacher or now in preparation for a hearing.

I suppose it just enables us to function at our highest level.

Meetings were always the worst part of teaching for me too, and often a complete waste of time, weekly.
You must be getting very excited about the grandchild arriving imminently.
