Frustrations at the nursing home

Saturday, September 21, 2019

Two big problems. Darn.

Hubby needs a "small" surgery. The pump holding a medicine needs to be replaced. After I think, 5 years they do that. But... it is Tuesday and Monday many things need to be done!
I didn't get the phone message* and I just found out today. I have been saying some prayers hoping it does not get too crazy. I guess he has to stay overnight Monday. Hopefully, the testing can be done at his nursing home. They did some of the tests today.

Hubby has a swallowing problem. Yesterday apparently it got bad during breakfast. I was not there. So, the solution is mushy meals. He will throw this kind of food! emoticon
He already gets thickened beverages.

The problem is not always happening. It is OK for quite awhile, then it becomes a problem again. emoticon

He gets therapy for swallowing. I think he can't feel when his throat gets partly clogged. Then he stuffs more in. And that is when he starts to choke. He is really stubborn and won't really face the problem.

The therapist is trying to teach him to "clear his throat." I work with him, too. But he gets mad at me. He does comply when the therapist is there.

* I have been sleeping way,way too much and feeling tired even when I am awake. emoticon I need more thyroid medicine I just found out. So... things like checking the phones does not happen often enough.

There are so many things happening in your life right now. You have to be worn out...physically and emotionally. Sleep is a way to escape when we are stressed or depressed. Right now you have to be a bit of both. The thyroid meds should help too. Prayers that all goes well for DH and his surgery. Prayers that you find some relief for the happenings in your life. emoticon emoticon emoticon

We had this with my dad. So sorry.... I learned the hard way that patients may comply better for strangers. It's so hard to be the caregiver. Try to put yourself first at least 50% of the time.

So sorry your DH is facing these problems. I hope you will continue to work on swallowing, and at the surgery to replace the pump goes well. I know you try very hard to be as supportive and loving spouse, and also his caregiver advocate. It is a very difficult role. Hugs and best wishes

Stress aggravates thyroid problems, too. **SIGH**

Good that your DH at least has a good rapport w/the therapist. Went thru that w/my Dad and it got to a point where I just couldn't say anything to him, I just let the therapist handle it. You know the old saying . . . . you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make 'em drink.

    Good luck w/DH's procedure.

Wow...that's a lot of stress. Glad you're seeing after the thyroid medication. Caregivers often need care themselves. I'm also glad that you're blogging your experiences. It becomes super important to have a community of support surrounding you when going through things like what you're facing. Take extra good care of yourself during this time and treat yourself to tasty, nutritious food. Drink plenty of water. Pour yourself a comforting cup of tea now and then. Try to get to bed and wake up at the same time each day, making sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep. I oversleep at times - when I'm trying to block other things that are troubling me. You can do this! Let's keep on Sparking! emoticon emoticon
