It's not just about calories

I've added yoga back to my exercise routine for a number of reasons: strength, balance, flexibility and calming to name just a few. There are a couple of classes at our gym and I've been thinking about trying a more aggressive form, but not sure about that. Read an article today in ("Experts Agree: Yoga Can Help You Lose Weight, Especially If You Do This Type of Practice"). Seems like depending on the type of yoga can help you burn calories.

But for me, it's not just about the calorie burn. Exercise for me is a way to keep my heart healthy, my body fit, my mind at ease. Walking our dog on a beautiful day just starts the day off right.

this paragraph in the yoga article says it all for me: "A more gentle yoga class, such as Hatha, won't burn as many calories. But it can benefit your mental health and decrease stress levels while helping you be more mindful, all of which have weight-loss benefits as well."

Why do you exercise? What are all the benefits for you?

    I love the "High" I get after exercise and it helps me sleep and think better!

    For me "benefit your mental health and decrease stress levels" are far more important than burning calories. When I'm in the right mental frame and stress levels are low, I find I don't want those high calorie foods. As a result, I don't have to worry about burning calories. That's a win/win to my way of thinking.

    Before I started exercising I was miserable and depressed, I love to exercise and the way I feel doing it that continues to make me smile through the day :)

    I exercise for the exact reasons you stated, lower stress, feeling good.

    I exercise to maintain flexibility, balance, strength, muscle toning, cardio fitness. But most of all for the effects on my mental well being. The calorie burn doesn't matter much at all -- gentle nutrition, stopping when I'm full, choosing optimal whole foods . . . that's what counts for weight maintenance.

    I started out exercising to help lose the weight. Actually, my sister suggested that we start exercising and I said sweat will never break this brow. We started walking the next morning not very far but added extra steps each day. Now at least 5 days a week I try to get some form of exercise. Somedays I need it to calm my anxiety etc.

    I feel the same about yoga, in the first 2 years of my healthy lifestyle journey I always chose cardio for the calories. Then I tried yoga and it made me feel sooo good... now if I 'm in a hurry and have to choose between yoga and cardio, usually I chose yoga. If I have time, I do both : )

    To counter the effects of aging. If I don’t do it, ordinary tasks like housework, lifting things, climbing stairs become more difficult faster than they need to.

    I have tried different yoga programs. looks like I should be doing more. Thanks for the info.
    I keep exercising for a healthier life and hope to walk and hike as long as I can, love being outside, gardening too.

    Looks like you have found a good balance. Exercise has been such a part of my life, I can't imagine short changing my health by cutting corners or cutting it out! I love feeling good---and exercise has diminished much of the chronic pain I had---have seen great improvements. Enjoy your day and your yoga!

    I exercise as the day allows. I do walking, weights, treadmill, and stationary bike. I do what I can as I try and keep busy all day. Speaking of which, time to go. Take care and enjoy the yoga.

    I have much more energy and a generally more upbeat mood. As far as weight control, I don’t know that I burn off much fat, but feeling better in other ways helps me have the fortitude to stick to my responsible eating plan without making excuses that “just this once won’t hurt”. It’s a win/win!
