Sandhill Crane - 8-27-19
Tuesday, August 27, 2019
Abbie Jensen, a professional photographer, caught this beautiful photo of a sandhill crane:
This week we'll celebrate the 8th annual Yampa Valley Crane Festival, which educates the public about these ancient birds and celebrates their presence in Northwest Colorado.
The Greater Sandhill Crane is an iconic species of the Yampa Valley in Northwest Colorado. Returning in the spring from wintering grounds in New Mexico and Arizona, cranes nest and raise their young in wetland areas throughout the valley. The Crane Festival is held at summer’s end during the peak of their stopover in the Yampa Valley.
When we were at the river for baptisms this weekend, a sandhill crane could be heard calling - it's a distinctive sound!
