A bit of this and a bit of that

Monday, August 26, 2019

I started my summer vacation about a month ago deciding to tweak my diet to see if I could make some healthy changes, or at least some changes just to see what would happen. I don’t have any results yet, but I don’t mind what comes out of it, even if it’s nothing at all. It would be nice to feel a little healthier or to lose a bit round the waist, but I’m not expecting much because I’m not making drastic changes.

I’ve cut out the occasional beer - I’d been enjoying it less anyway. I’ve been cutting food which has added sugar, and cutting down on prepared food. I don’t eat some of the things DH likes, like sausages and bacon, and I make sure I eat some things he’s not allowed but which are good sources of potassium. I’ve occasionally been eating chicken’s livers cooked in ginger and sweet sake because liver is so dense in nutrients. It tastes pretty good but I hadn’t eaten it for a long time. I increased fiber dramatically, and the effects were dramatic, so I pulled back on that!

Changing the subject, I was getting bored just exercising and cleaning house. In the UK, it was normal to go away for a summer holiday every year. In Japan, not so much - certainly not for two or three weeks. We hadn’t planned anything for this year, and last year DH was too ill. We’ve just arranged a two-day trip to Hakodate in northern Japan. Having that to look forward to has got rid of the boredom. Today DH walked the 400 meters to a nearby restaurant without stopping to rest. It must be nearly two years since he’s been able to do that without giving up in the middle. I’m amazed at how much stronger he’s been getting in the last six months or so.

Wonderful news about DH AND vacation is always nice to go on an adventure! I like that you continue to experiment to see how you can incorporate healthier choices into your life...some with better outcomes than others .... enjoy the process and the remaining time away from the j-o-b!

Glad you are going to take a little mini vacation! It's one of the many reasons I don't mind such a long drive to see the doctor...just to get away over night helps perspective!

It's great you have given up the added sugar and processed foods. I love liver but I prefer calf liver to chicken but goose is my favorite just too hard to find any time except Christmas!

Great that your husband is increasing his walking. Have you been going out walking with him or he's just getting better?

What a happy story! Your upcoming trip to Hakodate and your husband's being able to walk the whole way to the restaurant. I'm so glad things are looking up and there are fun things on the horizon. I would like to go to northern Japan, as I've never been. Let us know how you get there (Shinkansen? plane?) and what it's like. I'm happy for you!
