8/11/19 - Bedtime

Sunday, August 11, 2019

After washing the dishes, I grabbed a lawn chair out of the garage, so I could sit on the patio. It was already dark, so I was looking forward to some quiet time. After all the sensor lights had gone out, a raccoon came up the driveway. We were both very surprised to see each other. I'm guessing he's a regular visitor looking for a snack under the bird feeder. When he headed to the back of the garage, the black cat I see occasionally showed up, and he moved along quickly. Since I didn't want to run into a skunk, I put the chair away and went inside.

I cut back the peonies and pulled a bunch of weeds. When I dragged it out to the street, the yard waste container was full. I'm happy the garbage is collected on Mondays.

Scott has a couple of ears of corn sprouting on one of the stalks growing in his garden. Being a girl from the suburbs, I thought corn plants were like tomato bushes and expected a lot of ears would be growing on each stalk. That's a big plant for only one or two ears of corn. emoticon emoticon

Sweet dreams everyone!!!

Illinois is definitely a corn growing state. I lived in the burbs too, but we traveled to the country enough for me to see corn growing in the fields! emoticon emoticon

The mosquitoes would’ve gotten to me before any critters arrived!

We have less raccoons because of our containers for garbage, recycling and composting, all securely closed. The skunks on the other hand, week after dark I always sniff the air before I put my dog out😉🤣

We can see all sorts of wildlife as they pass in the shadows of the yard light and circle the pond. We sometimes sit on the deck to watch, but we mostly view from inside. We haven't seen any skunks, but we smell them at times, so we know they are there.

I mowed the peonies down on Friday. Excessive heat warnings kept me inside today and will again tomorrow.

    Have a good week! emoticon

Most definitely, if I sat on the patio after dark I'd also see foxes, cats, racoons, rabbits and for sure, skunks. We also have seen coyotes roaming around here and we live only two blocks west of our main street. If you open this, you'll see how we're surrounded by nature. You can see my morning walkway too. emoticon
