I Am Now A One Armed Bandit!

Saturday, July 20, 2019

No, not a slot machine! LOL. I had my surgery on my wrist/hand on Thursday, July 18th. The hospital had me scrub with a special soap twice before my surgery. No face cream, deodorant or skin cream allowed after the scrub. At least they are making a huge effort to control contamination with MERSA in this hospital. My skin, however, got a little chapped. At least my cheeks are pink!

I’m glad the surgeon told me ahead of time about the pain level. My arm was numb for the first 24 hours. That was weird because it felt almost detached from my body. It just kind of flopped around in the sling. Once the block wore off, there was a huge crush of pain. I was able to control much of it with elevation. The doctor gave me medication for pain which I use very sparingly.

I’m getting very good at doing things with my non dominant hand but I’ve had six months of practice. As I was going through all of the different stages of treatment, leading up to surgery, I was forced to use my other hand. I’m still not sure what the surgery entailed. The surgeon spoke to hubby after my surgery but hubby didn’t remember everything. That’s okay, I will ask the surgeon when I go in for suture removal and wound inspection in 2.5 weeks. Then I’ll get my cast put on my hand/arm. The hard splint I currently am sporting goes up above the elbow. I hope the cast won’t be that far up my arm!

Hubby is taking such good care of me! My family and friends have also been super supportive (including my Spark family!) with lots phone calls, texts, cards and emails. I feel very blessed.

And, you're smiling! Despite the huge crush of pain that followed when the block wore off, you do appear to be relieved to have the surgery behind you. It was a long time coming and you've come out the other side. emoticon

emoticon Wishing you a non-eventful recovery.

So happy you're feeling well taken care of and supported. emoticon
