Since my first yoga class, and many Alpha classes since, I've been taught how we face a workout often can be a lesson for - or reflection of - how we face life. "Your mat is your mirror" and "how you do anything is how your do everything" indicates the idea that your emotional and mental response to a difficult pose, unstable balance, or painful hold could indicate of you would likewise engage in negative self-talk, quit, give up on your goals, or curse and complain when faced with a difficulty in your home or work life. Or instead, will you buckle down, focus, grit your teeth, and fiercely fight through knowing you've got this?

I have been thinking about the relationship between my physical grip strength and my emotional grip on life in the past month.

Hanging on during a hard time is exhausting. Telling yourself you've got this. Keeping your focus and not losing form. Remembering the little things. It takes not just the physical strength to hold on, but the mindset has to be there, too: There is pain. There is rawness. There may be damage done, sometimes blood shed, and eventually scars made.

But you keep at it. You get tougher. You get better. You get stronger. You can hang on longer.
