So it’s been over 5 years since I last Sparked.
Three deaths I had to mourn and a severe concussion I had to heal from in that time. It’s been a long road.
Coming up on the 3rd anniversary of my concussion and finally feeling like I am capable of actual physical activity (beyond standing up to walk to wherever I’m going then walking back and sitting back down). I’ve come through that ordeal with a whole new understanding of just how much it takes to recover from a TBI.
Anyway, physically, I feel ready and able to move forward. I’m no longer afraid to jump (so high impact is okie dokie) and I can finally bend/lean over without triggering a headache (which means I don’t have an excuse not to do plank work or *insert groan here* burpees and the like).
I started unbelievably slowly a few weeks ago. I’m talking snail-crawling-through-molasse
s slow. Like, for the first workout, I did the warmup. And that was it. Then I rested a couple of days. Second workout, I did the warmup and one partial circuit (skipped some sets and reps). That pattern of gradually adding sets and circuits and taking days off continued for a while. Since I’d been inactive so long, that slow approach saved me from getting massively sore, but it did try my patience. Still, I stuck it out.
It took some time, but I’ve finally turned the corner and now no longer have to force myself into a workout. Today, I was actually looking forward to my routine. Was champing at the bit to start!
And as of today, I’ve twice made it through an entire workout (Jillian Michaels’ Banish Fat Boost Metabolism), minus a few reps here and there, and after a 30-min cooldown today, I decided I wasn’t done and added a Firm ab workout to finish out. Huuuuuge leap from feeling so whipped after one circuit that I was just hoping my muscles would cooperate long enough to get me through my shower to having enough left in me after a full workout to do a little more.
I’m so happy to have resumed my journey to a stronger and healthier body!
I am sad to see that most of the Spark Teams seem to be inactive. I hope I can find a few people left for mutual motivation.
