Am I at Maintenance

Monday, July 08, 2019

Today my weight is 160.2 (just a bit down from yesterday, and maybe a couple pounds down for the week). I'd like to be at 155, or even lower. With weight this close to the goal, I think I'm behaving like maintenance - simply good food choices and decent portion control. I know, however, from extensive experience, that my maintenance cannot include snacks. My meals cover my calorie needs and snacks only add unneeded calories.

OK. I know all that, but have not yet found a replacement for a savory, crunchy thing to chew on when watching a movie or other entertainment in the evenings. That's when the snacks loom. So I find this phase of weight management to be the most difficult. If I weighed more I'd be on a diet and watching for weight loss. But now I'm at the rest of my life stage and don't want to gain weight, maybe even lose some. If I track food carefully I find that snacks can amount to another full meal a day. Hardly what I need. Tough to manage, though. So I'll keep at it, and try to be smart about what I eat.

I'm not a snacker, I managed to break that habit. I drink coffee, usually black, but I'll add a little milk as a treat sometimes.

Doug, Since I do not snack, I do not have suggestions to share. I like the suggestions shared by others in response. Have you every tried jicama? I'm wondering if savory spices in some yogurt could be made into a dip. The jicama is nice and crunchy and I think fairly low calorie. I like to include it in salads.

I found it to be a balancing act and through trial and error it eventually worked out. when I hit my goal I didn't really change much except I was doing a lot more exercise (cardiac rehab) and kept losing weight...go figure.

At the end I just kept eating the way I was, tracking my food, exercising....doing all the healthy things and eventually settled at 140 - 143 and have stayed there for over 6 years. You'll find what works for you. BTW there are days when my snacks equal my lunch in terms of calories, but that's OK as I factor that in with my daily calorie goal. You may also find a snack that satisfies that savory crunchy need that is lower in calories. There are plenty of chickpea snacks out there that are really good and 120 calories for 1/4 cup (and you do have to measure or those calories can add up!)

You are aware of the challenges! Have you tried crunchy veggies (celery, carrots, peppers, cucumber, radish, etc) perhaps with salsa or balsamic-mustard? When I have the calories I add some hummus or plain chickpeas mashed with cumin. Or see if a hot or cold drink will substitute. I struggle with this issue, too. And sometimes just allowing myself extra rest, nap, nice pillow, blow off something I don't want to do, is just as good as a snack. Best wishes!
