Volunteering - inertia

Saturday, July 06, 2019

I do volunteer work for the AARP (teach in the Safe Driving Program) and with my church (Food Bank and Affordable Housing assistance), as well as my local VA hospital. But I move coast to coast twice a year, taking some advantage of weather being better in SF than in DC in summer and winter (DC better spring and fall). Each move interrupts the regular volunteer schedule, and getting back into the rhythm has turned out to be difficult this summer.

Mostly, I blame it on some unexpected and unexplained hip pain that my doctors have not pinned down yet (more diagnostic work scheduled this month). The pain seems to have increased my inactive inertia, making it easier to do nothing than something. Nevertheless, I've got three days of classes scheduled for the AARP this week.

So I continue to look forward to getting back with the volunteer network. But I'm kind of discouraged that I have not actually done so yet this summer. I look forward to teaching and hope to gather some forward inertial there.

Hey Doug, Thanks for volunteering. I just moved to Western North Carolina and will be looking for volunteer opportunities once we get settled. There are a number of nature related opportunities here, quite a bit different from the Houston, TX area.
