07/03/19 Within Us

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." Ralph Waldo Emerson

"We think we found a weakness in this enemy and sent in Cody. How did it go, Cody?"

The other day, Nancy and I got into some petty argument. (I say it was petty. She would have said it was Armageddon.) As is our nature, neither of us would admit the possibility that we might be in error.

To her credit, Nancy finally said, “Look. I’ll tell you what. I’ll admit I’m wrong if you admit I was right.”

“Fine.” I said.

She took a deep breath, looked me in the eye and said, “I’m wrong.”

I grinned and replied, “You’re right.”

It's Compliment Your Mirror Day! Smile and tell that lovely person in the mirror just how wonderful and awesome they are. Because you really are! Affirm and acknowledge your inner and outer beauty; recognize your self-worth.
--Disobedience Day: a day to break free from being told what to do, to follow your own whim; also, great changes in our society began with disobedience by those who felt we could do and be better; today is dedicated to civil and social disobedience, also known as civil or passive resistance, a non-violent protest; the idea of civil resistance was present in ancient Greece when in Sophocles' play "Antigone" it was stated the conscience must be obeyed before human law; our greatest resistors were Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.
--National Eat Beans Day: today is a reminder of the nutrients supplied by beans and how they are an important part of eating healthy; beans are the good carbs and should not be skipped.
--National Chocolate Wafer Day: a salute to a yummy cookie that is perfect with ice cream.
--National Fried Clam Day: the fried clam is an iconic New England dish; another celebration about clams is Deep Fried Clams on November 1.
--Stay Out of the Sun Day: a reminder to protect our skin and eyes by staying out of the sun as much as possible and to wear sunscreen, hats, and protective clothing if you plan to be out for any length of time.
--International Plastic Bag Free Day: today raises awareness of the impact on our planet and environment by unwanted plastic bags and the danger to wildlife; one bag can last 100-150 years before it disintegrates.
--Air Conditioning Appreciation Day: more than a one-day celebration, this holiday goes till Aug. 15; early attempts at cooling the home temperatures were when the Persians and Romans used underground water tunnels to draw the heat away; in 1902, Willis Haviland Carrier originated the concept of air passing through water-filled coils; however they did it, we're glad someone figured out how to keep the house cool during the summer heat.
