07/02/19 Taking Care

Tuesday, July 02, 2019

"Fall in love with taking care of your body."

"I'm at the age now where half the stuff in my shopping cart has a longer expiration date than I do."

At one point during a game, the coach called one of his 7-year-old hockey players aside and asked, “Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?”

The little boy nodded in the affirmative.

“Do you understand that what matters is not whether we win or lose, but how we play together as a team?”

The little boy nodded yes.

“So,” the coach continued, “I’m sure you know, when a penalty is called, you shouldn’t argue, curse, attack the referee, or call him a pecker-head.”

Do you understand all that?”

Again the little boy nodded.

He continued, “And when I call you off the ice so that another boy gets a chance to play, it’s not good sportsmanship to call your coach ‘a dumb jerk’, is it?”

Again the little boy nodded.

“Good,” said the coach. “Now go over there and explain all that to your mother.”

It's I Forgot Day! Today is about making up for the forgotten birthdays and anniversaries plus planning how you're going to prevent forgetting in the future. With all of our fancy gadgets to remind us, those past excuses aren't going to hold water.
--World UFO Day: today commemorates the Roswell UFO Incident in 1947; bring out your foil hats and best conspiracies while we contemplate the idea that we're not alone.
--Freedom From Fear of Speaking Day: very few people have the natural talent of speaking in public and even fewer actually enjoy it; so much is tied to speaking well as success is dependent upon the ability to effectively and efficiently present your ideas to others; there are ways to learn how to speak in front of others such as Toastmasters and debate teams.
--Made in the USA Day: for today, make the extra effort to only purchase items that were made in the USA; read the labels and support our local manufacturing industries.
--Special Recreation for the Disabled Day: today is to raise awareness of the many programs available to provide sport opportunities for those with disabilities such as the wheelchair basketball.
--World Sports Journalists Day: a salute to the professionals who report on the sport activities and teams to keep the fans informed and engaged.
--National Anisette Day: an anise-flavored liqueur, a sweeter cousin to absinthe.
--In 1937, today was the last time contact was made with Amelia Earhart as she attempted her solo trip across the ocean.
--In 1843, an alligator fell out of the sky; the critter had been picked up by a waterspout and dropped in Charleston, South Carolina.
--In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 which bars racial segragtion in public places and discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
