My brother and I went to the Great Smokey Mountains today.
Our first stop was Oncolfuthee (sorry if I spelled it wrong) Visitor Center in North Carolina. We walked around the farmstead then walked the river trail. My brother used to love to walk but doesn't anymore. The trail goes to the Cherokee border, which was 1.5 miles. He decided at .6 miles that was enough. So we walked back. I felt great. It was not hot and there was a breeze. He had to sit and rest at the end. So we left to drive over to Cherokee. We usually walk around the shops and area. Nope. Stopped at Burger King to eat. Then find our way out. We drove back via 441 to Pigeon Forge. On the way back we saw an elk just grazing in the median of the road in front of Oncolfuthee Visitors Center.
Then I saw a sign for Mingus Mill but we got there and signs were up saying the area was closed.
We went to Clingmans Dome. The view from the parking lot were amazing. We started to walk to the top. We got up .26 miles of the .5 mile hike up. I called it. My lungs were screaming bloody murder. Asthma won, I had to use my inhaler. My thighs were screaming too. I'm not used to such steep inclines. I live at 300 feet above sea level. The mountains won today. I could tell my brother was struggling too. He was definitely relieved. By the time we got to the car, my legs were marshmallow. I don't think I could have walked any further.
In all it was a fun and different way to get my steps in besides my nightly walk around his neighborhood.
On a side note yesterday we went to the Dinosaur park in Bluff city, TN. It was a fun walk too.
