Lies We Tell Ourselves

I watched a video (I missed it live because of the AC going out, it was too hot to be in the office!! but she sent out a link to watch it for those of us that missed it) by Ruth Soukup on 7 productivity lies we believe. It totally blew me away!! In fact, so much so, that I later sat down and shared my notes with my kids and had a long talk with them over the course of dinner and tea afterwards. They are already (starting in 5th grade) being pushed by the school to pick what it is they want to do/be when they grow up. They are so young and have so many options open to them!!

But, back to the video. I'm working on putting the 'simple corrections' into place in my life. It will take a while, but I'm taking my time and remembering that 'mistakes are proof you are trying.' It made me really take a look at what I am doing and how I can change how I look at things and go about them. I want her planner so bad, it is even on sale right now, but, I don't think it is a priority right now, and we are financially... um... behind. So, I printed a few freebies off of the internet that will help me out and am using Word to help me make my own worksheet and things like that, till the 2020 binder comes out. I'm going to refer to my notes often, as I think I will need to be reminded a LOT, but it will be worth it.

I'm up super early and should have gone back to bed, but have so much on my mind, there is no way I can sleep. So I am trying to write it all down - do a 'brain dump' and get it out of my head and onto paper - or in this case a Word document. If I can't fall back asleep when I'm done, I'll get back up and then try to take a nap later today. I don't do well without sleep.

Lots to do today, I doubt I will get it all done today, but hopefully will be able to get it all done in the next few days and then get into routine again on Monday. Making my list now, and then will prioritize and order things. It's going to be a long couple of days, but hopefully very productive and satisfying.

I realized that I have gotten lazy, procrastinating and making excuses. I'm going to work on creating routines that will become habit, but I'm going to also work on prioritizing what really needs to be done first, so that if I don't get all the other stuff done it is okay, I got the most important stuff done. One of the excuses I use is that if DH is being lazy and doing nothing but playing around on his computer I should be able to as well. Truth is, I cannot change DH and make him help out around the house. I can ask, but that is it. I'm not the kind to nag. I did leave the Christmas tree (in it's box) in the living room till now because he said he would put up the Christmas boxes. I had the girls move the smaller boxes down to the basement. But the tree is still there. I asked him to move it again, gently reminding him, and he told me to do it. I got so frustrated!!! But, after a moment (and a bunch of really deep breaths and counting to ten) I remembered that I can only change myself, not anyone else. I wish he would help out more around the house, just because I am the stay at home Mom, does not mean that ALL housework falls on me, I am not a maid!! But, I can only do what is in my power to do. Using my DH as an excuse for me not to get things done is silly. So, I'm trying to get rid of all my excuses for laziness and procrastination and just do it. Do the thing, whatever it is.

One thing that Ruth pointed out in her video is that we only sleep (or need to sleep) 7-8 hours a day. That leaves 16 to 17 hours a day to do things!! Now she is not saying you should be busy working the whole time, but you can make time for the things that need to be done, plus schedule time for spending with family, or relaxing, all the things you need to do instead of mindlessly browsing on Pinterest, or whatever. I'll admit to having spent way too many hours mindlessly scrolling on different websites. Now I'm only going to use those sites as needed and even then restrict my time doing so. For example, I'm going to watch one instructional youtube video a day. So are my kids. For me it will be on sewing, for the kids it will be whatever topic they are interested in (I will help them pick out the video they are going to watch, I do not give them free range on youtube) and take time to work on whatever it is, for example, my oldest wants to learn to draw better, so it will take time for her to draw as she goes. My youngest is interested in origami, so she will need to pause a lot as she stops to follow instructions. This is the lie that there are not enough hours in the day, and the truth is, we all get the same amount of hours as everyone else, and there are more hours than we think, we just don't use them properly. Have I mentioned how much I really want her planner?!

I think I have decided I'm just going to stay up. I'm tired, but too awake to sleep. I'm going to go make some breakfast and then work on my daily to do list and priorities. Meal planning is a must today, as well as grocery shopping.
