June 13, 2019 OUR MOTIVES
We all have motives in our lives. Our motives are what cause us to do either right or wrong. The motives in our hearts are revealed by our words and actions. If we are motivated to do God’s will, we will follow Him and live a life according to His word and His will. If we are motivated to take action for selfish gain, we find ourselves hidden in darkness and filled with bad thoughts and evil desires. Every day is a new day to get our hearts right with God and ensure our motives are to solely do His will.
Jeremiah 17:9-10 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.” (NLT)
1. Write what your motives are today.
2. List any wrong motives you may have.
3. Know motives are defined as purposes or intentions you have in life.
4. Seek only God’s will and His purpose to do what glorifies His name.
Dear Lord, we know we sometimes get caught up in life and pulled into the things of the world. Our motives can quickly change from desiring to serve You to desiring the things of the world. Fame, fortune and fun from this world comes at us each day tempting us to desire things only for ourselves. Help us to remember to keep our eyes fixed on You. Renew us each day by examining the motives in our hearts to be sure they are in tune with You and Your will. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
God will bring to light any wrong motives we have in our hearts. He will also praise and reward us for our right motives.
1 Corinthians 4:5 “Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.” (NIV)
We need to ask God to test our motives and test our hearts to be sure what we are doing is for His glory and not our own.
Psalm 26:2 “Put me on trial, Lord, and cross-examine me. Test my motives and my heart.” (NLT)
We should be motivated to please only God and keep our heart free from motives to do wrong.
1 Thessalonians 2:4b “Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts.” (NLT)
