Glad to be Part of a Strong Running Group
Saturday, June 01, 2019
Today was the annual kick-off of our Lakeland Galloway training program/running group. We had a speaker, Chris Twiggs, from Jeff Galloway's organization. We met at our local running store and they provided water, coffee, pancakes, fruit, and timing. Not all our members came to welcome our prospective new members (some were out running elsewhere) but I did and was glad I was there. I skipped the pancakes -- but had plenty of breakfast before and after at home. Several new people joined today. We did a one mile run-walk-run and we self-selected running groups with the option of falling back or speeding up. My group of 5 did it right at 12 minutes, not fast, but not the slowest group either. Next week the group is back to meeting at Starbuck's, and will run longer, but I'll be running the first Watermelon race of 2019 and my first race in the 70-74 year age group.
In 2 weeks I'll get to see how many new members we have picked up. Our group of 170 has splintered some. A couple pace groups have opted to keep running without being affiliated with Galloway. I won't be surprised if those groups have trouble keeping enough numbers for everyone to have the safety and companionship we get running in a group. A few people have opted to remain affiliated with the gym that hosted the Galloway program last year. That may work, but they tend to be faster runners than I am. I think I'm right where I need to be in a running group.
Oh, if you are looking for me in the picture, look for the really tall guy in the back on the right side. I'm in front of him and slightly to the right. Fritz, my 83 year old white-haired runner friend, is just to the left of me.
Hope you have exercise buddies and all the social support you need to live an active, happy lifestyle!!
PS Let's try cropping that picture:
Yeah, I think that's a little better.
Hey, they just posted some running pictures. That's me, all the way to the left. Guess our 5th member ran up and took the picture:
