05/24/19 - The "D" Word

Friday, May 24, 2019

I want to tell you how much I've come to dislike the "D" word - diet.

My DM has never been a very healthy person. I remember her going to the gym and using a contraption that was supposed to "shake" the fat away. She also did an aerobics class very briefly. She was not a healthy eater, so all her efforts to exercise were in vain and she gave up.

Now that I'm on my journey to healthier eating and exercising, she keeps insisting I'm on a "diet" because I'm not eating tons of food loaded with sugar and empty calories. She doesn't seem to understand that I'm changing my bad patterns for the good so I can be healthier for my girls and to combat my illness.

I know most of her mindset comes from the 80's when it was considered a "diet" if you didn't eat junk food or you ate vegetables. I do not let her attitude bother me most of the time. My DD has begun to want to eat healthier, and DM has been telling her she's on a diet now too. I've been combatting my DM's mindset with my DD by telling her it's not a diet but a healthy lifestyle and she's doing herself a huge favor by starting to healthy eating now while she's young.

I have removed the works "diet" and "can't" from my vocabulary - for the most part anyway. I just don't want my DD thinking she's doing something wrong if she doesn't fill her body with junk and wants to eat healthy.

Call it a “lifetime” healthy eating diet around your DM. Good blog!

Great blog, so true, when I am with others, and refuse unhealthy food they always say that I’m on a diet.
